Millennium Leaders: Introduction

10 children interviewed a number of political leaders to ask questions about their local area.

In summer of 2000 Eastside carried out a project called Millennium Leaders, - an intergenerational project working with young people in Newham and East London as part of which they trained young people to be journalists using various video techniques. The interviews enabled the youngsters to develop inspiring and positive local role models.

The dedicated group returned to the classroom during their summer holiday to continue with the Millennium Leaders project that they have worked on in their own time. The interviews took place during the week of 20th and 27th August 2000 and early September 2000. The pupils carried out face to face interviews and also devised the interview questions. The pupils pointed out the parts of the eight interviews they wanted included in the film, then second year media studies undergraduates from the University of East London (Royal Docks Campus) visited to give the youngsters tips on video editing.

Eastside Community Heritage Project Manager:

"As project manager my role was to develop different projects and seek funding for it, and deliver them, I approached a local school that was very interested".

"The process of the project was where we started off with workshops in the school diversing the questions. The aim was to promote civic pride, local leadership, awareness of issues in the local environment, developing peoples confidence and getting them to think a bit broader not just about going to school and learning the national curriculum.

I took a group to Westminster to interview Stephen Timms, they all had different roles; cameraman, director and interviewer and they all swapped roles around"
